Childhood Obesity and Overweight
Overweight is a serious health concern for children and
adolescents. The most recent data indicates that in
the United States about 16% of children ages 6 – 19
years old are overweight. Since the 1970s overweight
has doubled among young children aged 2 – 5 years
old and tripled among school-aged children ages 6 – 19
years old.

We Can!™ (Ways to Enhance Children's Activity & Nutrition)
An initiative of the National Institute of Health
Nationally:
We Can! is a science-based initiative
that has evolved into a rapidly growing social
movement, supporting the Surgeon General’s healthy
youth initiative. The Surgeon General's initiative
spotlights the serious and growing health problem of
overweight children and calls upon parents, caregivers,
schools, and communities to take steps to reverse the
trend. Fortunately, overweight in children can often
be reversed or prevented. To ensure a healthy future
for America's children, it is important to:
- Help kids stay active
- Encourage healthy eating habits
- Promote healthy choices
Locally: We Can! Pittsburgh is among eight
cities participating in an initiative that addresses
obesity in children.
